Two New Montblanc 1858 Collection Watches Tout The Minerva Heritage
Montblanc 1858 Chronograph Tachymeter |
Two new limited-edition timepieces for the Montblanc 1858 Collection were unveiled Tuesday at SIAR 2015, the luxury watch show in Mexico City. Both watches, as with the rest of the collection, pay tribute to the 157-year history of the Minerva watch manufacturer, known for its hand-made chronograph movements.
The watch manufacturer was acquired by luxury holding company Richemont in 2006 and is now part the Montblanc brand, which Richemont owns. Montblanc changed its name to Villeret, after the picturesque Swiss town where the facility is located. It still produces hand-made high chronographs, tourbillons and classic watch lines; and bespoke timepieces for private clients. It also provides specialist movements for Montblanc’s main watch manufacturing facility in Le Locle.
The newest pieces for the Montblanc 1858 Collection were modeled after a chronograph launched by the Minerva manufacture in the 1930s in both appearance and function.
The main product released Tuesday is the Montblanc 1858 Chronograph Tachymeter. The 18k red gold 44 mm-diameter case features a design with rounded forms inspired by those of the Minerva chronograph from 1930. In keeping with the original design and function, the watch has a beveled winding crown with a monopusher function to activate the chronograph.
The vintage-style dial has “cathedral” hands coated with beige Super-LumiNova, so they can be seen at night. The display is laid out around two counters, the first displays the seconds at 9 o'clock, and the second subdial shows the minutes that have elapsed once the chronograph complication has been started. The dial background painted in deep black with the historic Montblanc emblem shows a traced rail track with a tachymetric scale for measuring speed in terms of a timed kilometer.
The MB M16.29 caliber of the hand-wound monopusher chronograph is the same size as that of a pocket-watch. It was inspired by the original chronograph movement, the 17.29 caliber, designed by Minerva in 1929, and has many of the same functions. The column-wheel is activated by the single push-piece built into the winding crown. The iconic engraved Minerva “V” chronograph bridge can be seen through the transparent case back (pictured above).
The horizontal coupling in this classic construction is combined with a lever that holds the chronograph's hammers, and is finished off with a little arrow, the visual signature of Minerva. This classic mechanism, assembled, adjusted and finished by hand in Villeret; comprises 252 components, has a depth of 6.30 mm and oscillates at 18,000 vibrations per hour, with a power reserve of about 50 hours.
It is being sold as a limited edition of 100 pieces.
The other product launched at SIAR 2015 is the Montblanc 1858 Small Second Special Edition timepiece (pictured above). The stainless steel, 44 mm diameter case has a design that contains many of the codes of the historical chronographs produced by Minerva. A direct-drive small seconds is located at 6 o'clock and has a hand-wound caliber with a beveled winding crown.
Like the previous timepiece, this watch has a vintage-style black dial has Arabic numerals, “cathedral” hands coated with beige-painted Super-LumiNova, and the historic Montblanc logo.
The MB 23.03 manually wound caliber has 17 jewels and an approximate 46-hour power reserve once the barrel has been fully wound. It has a balance that oscillates at 21,600 vibrations an hour. The visible finishes can be seen through the transparent caseback.
It is being sold in a limited edition of 858 pieces, paying tribute to the birthday of Minerva in 1858.

Fashion Trends – Sock it To Me or Nah?
SOCK it to you or nah? Celebrities are taking a STANCE to be About That Sock Life, which means the rich are getting richer, and this FASHION accessories blogger is getting WORDIER. As consumers, we put them on, only to toss them to the side once we’re done with them, but it turns out that sock lines are BIG business. Move over soft drinks and skin care lines, socks are products with mass appeal. I mean did you even know that wearing socks with sandals is now “in”?
Celebrities Who You Probably Don’t Know Have Sock Lines
Rihanna – yep, the Barbados beauty and songstress has joined the fashion movement and her sock line mirrors her personality in being a whole lot REBELLIOUS with a dose of Chic. Expect newspaper print and horror poster style designs that will kidnap your attention. (In a heavy English accent) Can you please have some more? Sure, check-check the video below. I’m already in love with the catchy name of her line; Murder Rih Wrote—it’s one that’ll stick in one’s head for sure right?
Rob Kardashian – I already know what you’re thinking. We don’t see him anymore. You wonder if he’s lost weight. You wonder if he’ll ever make another appearance on the Keeping up with the Kardashians. This is about fashion accessories so I’m going to bow out by saying that I don’t know. But what is for certain, is that HOMEBOY’s got a sock line. Arthur George is the name, and his designs are quite creative. My favorites are the catchy words cleverly written on sock soles i.e…Baby Daddy, Sole Mate. And in true he-get-it-from-his-mama Kris Jenner form, Rob Kardashian has got all of his bases covered. He offers up everything from crew socks to fashion leggings, to tights.
Dwayne Wade – He’s not just a hoopster on the Miami Heat, as most have seen, Dwayne Wade loves FASHION and STYLE, and his sock line is a reflection of HIM. Think mixed patterns; a leopard, checkerboard, stripe combo. When you think about it, it’s kind of cool to have accessories that are authentically you; let’s not forget that it’s also something that he’s making a profit from.
Snoop Dog – This won’t be too long of a description, just know that it’s in fashion. The marijuana leaf and bandanna pattern, the oh-so-very much Snoop socks.
Patrick Carney – Whooo??? He’s the drummer of The Black Keys, for those of you who didn’t know. This is when this Blog Post goes RANDOM. It just proves my point that sock lines may be MORE than just a fashion trend.
And here’s your dose of Celebrity Accessories Gossip. Guess who just signed an endorsement deal with STANCE SOCKS? The one and only bearded one, the ballin’ James Harden. He sure did. Now, all of this sock talk is making Cityrocka Perry want to rummage her sock drawer to find suitable replacements that are COOL and totally MORE ME. If you’re in, keep it scrolling… keep it scrolling…

October birthstone baubles
I was particularly excited about this month’s blog since October has two dedicated birthstones.
The first, and probably the one most consumers already know about, is opal.
This stone will forever make me think of my mother. As an October baby, she has always been a huge fan of opal and gladly wears her birthstone whenever she can. It is a constant in her jewelry collection and gave me an appreciation for the stone.
Opals are an exceptional stone, and the play of color they offer make them unique in their beauty.
In fact, it was the stone’s ability to show the colors of all the other gems that led the Romans to believe it was the most precious and powerful of all, according to the GIA. They associated it with hope and good luck, and many cultures have credited the gem with supernatural origins and powers.
While I think everyone appreciates all the different types of opals available, I’ve focused on white opals in this blog post since they tend to be the opals most often associated with birthstone jewelry.
The second birthstone for October, tourmaline, is a personal favorite.
The stone is valued for its beautiful range of color, which, according to an old Egyptian legend, is because on its long journey up from the center of the Earth, tourmaline passed over a rainbow and in doing so, assumed all its colors.
Tourmaline is thought to bring courage and strength to the wearer. For someone looking to step out of the traditional birthstone box, I couldn’t think of a better gemstone.
Here are 10 pieces of jewelry dedicated to the two stars of October.
